I am wondering if I saw a black shouldered kite at 6,000 feet in the alpine
meadows of Goat Rocks Wilderness area on Monday near the Pacific Crest
trail. On two occasions I saw what appeared to be a kite. Alas, my big
mistake of the trip--I left my binoculars at home. But the bird had the
right shape and appeared to have a white tail. It hovered over a meadow
like a black shouldered kite. The shape of the wings was not falcon-like
nor were they shaped like a buteo. Another time it (or a different one) was
circling and the tail appeared white. Are these birds up this high?
