Hey tweets, lots of rarities at the Fill today. The best was a LARK
SPARROW. I found it eating gravel on the road that curves south of the
CUH building. It flew into the field south of the greenhouses (the
field that is surrounded by chainlink fence), where it fed on the
ground with various finches. I'd have to check the records to see if a
Lark Sparrow has ever been seen at the Fill before - I know I've never
seen one.

Added to the thrills today were:
an American Kestrel juvenile, that seems to favor the artificial snags
set up just east of the dime parking lot; I hope it settles here for a
while;
a Black-headed Grosbeak in the grove of trees by the temporary pond
where we often see solitary sandpipers (I call it Boy Scout Pond - it's
beside the first overlook just before you get to the point);
two Semipalmated Sandpipers on the main pond, along with a Western and
a Lesser Yellowlegs
a Wilson's Warbler in the willows at the south end of the main pond;
a Yellow Warbler in the same willows;
a Western Wood-pewee in the secluded pond south of the dime parking lot;
Double-crested Cormorants are back from their breeding grounds;
baby Pied-billed Grebes are cheeping for fish from their parents;
both Anna's and Rufous Hummingbirds are eating insects around the dime
parking lot ponds.

All together, it was just a great day. It's turning out to be a
wonderful fall migration.
