Yesterday (Monday, August 13th) I was at Point No Point for the ebb.
All of the birds one would expect to see were present, including
hundreds of RED-NECKED PHALAROPES winging their way south, some
stopping to feed. They seemed to pass by in flocks of 25-30. When I
was checking out the beach near the Hansville Market, I noted plovers
at the outfall pipe. There were about six Black-bellied Plovers in
various stages of molt and one adult AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER in basic
plumage. I went as far as Ediz Hook before I turned around and
headed home. The only other observation of interest was a staging of
52 juvenile HARLEQUIN DUCKS in the quiet water by the log booms, just
after leaving the Nippon plant grounds at the base of Ediz Hook. I
didn't see an adult in the crowd. Is this a typical gathering of
young Harlequins before winter dispersal?
