There seems to be quite a bit of yellow to black color variation in the
wings and tail. I always think of Orange-crowned Warblers as being quite
uniform in these areas. Is there any possibility this is an immature
kinglet?

So my strong hunch is yes, yours is an Orange-Crowned Warbler.
