Hello, tweeters.

Netta Smith and I kayaked along the east shore of Jetty Island this
morning. To augment Penny Koyama's list from yesterday, we saw:

2 Spotted Sandpipers
25 Western Sandpipers
1 Least Sandpiper
1 Baird's Sandpiper

All were juveniles except the Spotted Sandpipers, which nest there.
Spending a lot of time photographing stuff along the way, we didn't
make it to the north end of the island; I wish I'd seen Penny's post
before we went there!

I was amazed at the large numbers of Caspian Terns in the southern
part of the island, certainly 50 or more adults, many of them feeding
somewhat fewer full-grown juveniles. Does anyone know if they nested
there? I've been in and out of touch with the Tweeters Digest but
don't recall reading anything about this. A horde of people descended
on the island while we were there and immediately fanned out toward
the southern end, flushing all the terns, which returned quickly only
to be flushed several times again by others walking past. They seemed
to take it in stride and carried on with their calling and feeding,
but I wondered how much disturbance they could take. There are signs
on the island asking people not to disturb nesting birds. If the
terns actually nested there, I hope that part of the island was
closed to the public during their season.
