Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report
was made Thursday August 30. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

On August 26 a BLACK RAIL was reported from the Bayocean Spit at Tillamook
Bay. That day a LAUGHING GULL was photographed on Clatsop Beach north of
Gearhart. The August 25 offshore boat trip photographed four XANTUS?S
MURRELETS off Newport.

BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were reported during the week with up to 15 on the
North Spit of Coos Bay, five at the South Jetty of the Siuslaw River, three
at the mouth of the Necanicum River at Gearhart, one at the Fernhill
Wetlands, and one at Fern Ridge Reservoir.

On August 25 a STILT SANDPIPER was at Bandon. The August 26 offshore boat
trip out of Coos Bay found a FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATER. Up to 33 ELEGANT TERNS
were at the South Jetty of the Siuslaw River during the week. Three were off
Yaquina Head north of Newport August 26. On August 28 a RUFF was at the Bay
City Oyster Plant on Tillamook Bay. A WHITE PELICAN was at Seaside August
27. A STILT SANDPIPER was at Stanley Lake in Seaside August 23.

An unusual fall-out of hummingbirds was reported August 24 at Mt. Tabor Park
in Portland. Good numbers of RUFOUS and ANNA?S HUMMINGBIRDS with one COSTA?S
HUMMINGBIRD. Among other migrants that day was a GRAY FLYCATCHER. On August
28 a BLACK-CHINNED and a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD were seen on Mt. Tabor. An
early ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was over Oregon City August 24. A FRANKLIN?S GULL
was there August 27. A LONG-BILLED CURLEW, a RUFF, and a STILT SANDPIPER
were reported from Fern Ridge Reservoir during the week.

On August 26 two PYGMY NUTHATCHES were at Mt. Pleasant, several miles east
of Washougal, Washington. On August 23 two SANDERLINGS were at the mouth of
Hood River. A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was at Cloud Cap on the east side of
Mt. Hood August 26. A GRAY CATBIRD was at Calliope Crossing north of Sisters
August 25.
