Hi all,

SKAMANIA COUNTY, one of the best-named counties in WA (along with it?s neighbor Wahkiakum) is in the Race! WILSON CADY has made certain of this with an entry that stands at 82 in Acreage and includes birds never before typed into the highlights section of the leaderboard, such as DUSKY FLYCATCHER (along wi 5 other tyrannidae), Pygmy Nuthatch, & Hermit Warbler. Northern Goshawk is also not often typed in.

One of YBR?s biggest records, the Residential yard-type overall record, may not SURVIVE the year. PATRICK & RUTH SULLIVAN are at 102 with exactly four months remaining in the race. One more ties the overall record of 103 and after that any species, whatever it?s identity will be called the Go-ahead-Bird.

The Sullivans, in Fircrest, south of Tacoma, have BROAD-WINGED & Swainson?s HAWK as well as Western Kingbird.

(JIM DANZENBAKER, when last heard from, was at 99 in residential yard/type in Battleground with, to pick one highlight bird at random, a White-breasted Nuthatch).

In Anacortes, the record in R y/t is now tied as KRISTI HEIN & CASEY BAZEWICK are at 48 with a Yellow Warbler. This is despite missing 11 species that were on the list by the end of last year.

At the same time MARISSA BENEVENTE & JIM FLYNN continue their project of rewriting the record books in Seattle and as last reported were already at 76, well ahead of the current overall Seattle records in all classes. Benevente/Flynn are in West Seattle and have NIGHTHAWK & WESTERN SCREECH OWL.

Meanwhile, BRETT WOLFE is creating a legend in the University District, where he has added five to the current record and is at 45 including NIGHTHAWK with one of his most recent sightings being an early-morning BARN OWL flying overhead.

SCOTT HOSKIN also has a NIGHTHAWK and has the record in Ballard tied up at 51.

CAROLYN EAGAN is at 91 in Port Ludlow, just 5 short of the record.

ERIN & BILL WOODS, working east of Redmond, are 3 over the record at 56 with Barred & Great Horned Owls.

RYAN MERRILL is way out in record territory in Kirkland and in KingCo W with 86 including NIGHTHAWK, SURF SCOTER & REDHEAD.

GARY BLETCH, with Golden Eagle & Bank Swallow has an impressive 86 but needs 9 more to tie his own record of 95.

RACHEL LAWSON, working in perhaps the most urban of YBR settings so far but in Residential Y/T appears to have a new record in the bag in SOUTH QUEEN ANNE with 34, 3 up from the old mark, including a Yellow Warbler and Warbling Vireo.

When the American League brought in the designated hitter, some say it didn?t ruin Baseball. Perhaps the future of the YardBirdRace is hinted at by JOHN TUBBS and his working (is that ?designated??) yard from which he?s currently posting 71 including BREWER?S SPARROW (photos) and NORTHERN SHRIKE. Previous working-yard racers included DENIS DESILVIS and BRIAN PENDLETON, currently racing from Roy and Auburn respectively.

The potential of a Designated Yard to expand YardBirdRacing (who wants Samamish State Park, or Marymoore?) won?t be discussed today.

Which reminds me, MICHAEL HOBBS is at 50 in Kirkland with a TOWNSEND?S SOLITAIRE.

In Skamokawa, ANDREW EMLEN is at 75 with Wild Turkey, six short of the Wahkiakum mark.

In Olympia, as of last report, CLARE CRAWFORD AND JODY GREENE were tied at 32 in Olympia in residential while RUPERT GROVE & DANA ORIDE were at 52 in W in that city.

In somewhat older news, OLLIE & GRACE OLIVER were at 43 in Redmond back in May, ALAN HUGGINS was within 5 at 71 on Vashon back in May, TAYLER BROOK was at 59 with Kestrel and Western Screech Owl in May, CHRISTINE SOUTHWICK was at 39 in Shoreline in late spring and LINDA BAINBRIDGE & KATHRYN & MERVYN FLOYD on Whidbey were at 61 and 51 back in the spring.

And there are MANY MORE racers that I have randomly forgotten to mention (my apologies!!!).

Racing yields benefits for bird conservation. Last year over $1600 was donated to the American Bird Conservancy, the ABC's Save the Cerulean Warbler Campaign and BirdLife International. Many subscriptions to the superb Washington Birder quarterly were won, and in YardBirdRacing, due to the anomalies of this otherwise difficult sport, everyone wins!

Call for photos!?
When I work on the current press release I notice I don?t have many quality photos of birds that could help improve the press release visually. Any photos will be credited and appreciated, low res jpegs and credit line are all I need or permission and a url and any typical yardbird photo is very welcome.

Thanks all!
