My family needed to be in Clarkston today, so my dad and I went early
and did some Asotin County birding. Temperatures hovered comfortably
just above freezing although light snow fell for much of the morning.
It was a great morning with lots of bird activity. Our most productive
location was Chief Timothy SP, where we had 35 species in an hour. We
also birded along the Snake River back to Clarkston, stopping at the
Habitat Management Area and along Evans Rd as well as a few locations
in Clarkston including Swallows Park, ending with 48 species in the
county. Highlights are listed below.

Snow Goose - 2 adults at Swallows Park, flew out although the rest of the geese remained

Western Grebe - 1 on the river

Horned Grebe - several

Redhead - 80 with a bunch of wigeons near Chief Timothy SP

Herring & Ring-billed Gulls - no unusual gull species

Great Horned Owl - 3 at Chief Timothy SP

Merlin - 1 in Clarkston

American Robin - high numbers in all the parks

Townsend's Solitaire - 1 at Chief Timothy SP

Mountain Chickadee - a few at Chief Timothy SP and at Swallows Park; persisting in the lowlands for whatever reason

Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1 at Chief Timothy SP, 1 at Evans Rd, and 1 at Swallows Park

Brown Creeper - 1 at Chief Timothy SP

Marsh Wren - several along Evans Rd

Bohemian Waxwing - 1 lone bird with about 400 Cedars at Chief Timothy SP

Northern Shrike - 1 at Chief Timothy SP

White-crowned Sparrow - good numbers at Chief Timothy SP but no oddities

Red-winged Blackbird - 3 at Swallows Park

Yellow-rumped Warbler - 2 at Chief Timothy SP

Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch - heard briefly at Clarkston Heights

I'll be posting a few photos soon to www.flickr.com/photos/nightjar,
including a close GH Owl, the Snow Geese, and cooperative RC Kinglet.
