The crows are sailing up, down and all around in the gusty winds that picked up around 11:30 out here this morning. A lull in the rain gave them a chance to dry and stretch their wings. The smaller birds are keeping close quarters within the trees and shrubs and not getting to far from the feeders.

After all of yesterday's snow (10 inches out here near Tahuya) they didn't get much chance to feed so they are putting all the leftovers from yesterday to good use. It was impossible to keep the deck cleared for them to feed. I was able to keep a small area right next to the house cleared but every now and then snow falling from the metal roof would fill the bare area and out with the shovel I'd go. The mourning doves fared hardest I think as they were mostly too shy to come that close to the house. Instead they sat, hunkered down, in the snow laden dogwood tree.

I was amazed to see all the snow gone this morning. After getting drenched putting out fresh food for my feathered friends I thought I'd try to venture into Belfare. I got a whopping 0.7 miles north along North Shore Rd, crossing two new streams across the road, before finding the road blocked by gravel slides and a small river running down the road up into another subdivision. I headed back toward the Tahuya River crossing (and the only other way to get into town, albeit longer) when I stopped and spoke with a homeowner trying to salvage his own place. He informed me that the Tahuya River bridge was out. So I was going nowhere fast but home.

Since I can't go anywhere, at least until tomorrow, maybe North Shore will be open enough for a car to get through, I'll sit here and watch the wind blow the crows around. On those nice summer days when we see a large bird floating effortlessly on the thermals we all muse on how it nice it would be to be a bird. If we could be granted that wish to be a bird for a moment or two it would probably come with the restriction of not being able to chose which day we got to be the bird. Today I'm glad I'm not a bird.
