Yesterday 13 of us walked Nisqually in brisk conditions. We had a bit of
drizzle at the start of the walk but it stopped soon. The rest of the walk it
was chilly & breezy.

After the weekend storms there is plenty of water about including lots of
MALLARDS, PINTAIL and AMERICAN WIGEON. We also saw 17 SNOW GEESE in with the
CACKLERS.

One of our main highlights was a lone VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW at the McAllister
Creek overlook. A late sighting to say the least. Other highlights
included both PILIATED WOODPECKER and HAIRY WOODPECKER in the riparian area just
past the Nisqually River overlook. The PILIATED put on a show as we were headed
toward the ring dike and the HAIRY showed up as we returned.

We had a good day on raptors with several NORTHERN HARRIERS and RED-TAILED
HAWKS about. We also saw ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS (new for the year), BALD EAGLES
and a COOPER'S HAWK. The PEREGRINE FALCON was absent early but was back in
the doug fir behind the visitor center when we finished up.

All told we saw 46 species with the ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS being new for the
year.

Mammals seen were HARBOR SEALS on the Nisqually River.
