In Washington, it is unlawful to release "wildlife" anywhere within the
state, other than on the property where it was legally trapped, without
a permit from the State Dept. of Fish and Wildlife.

"Wildlife" refers to all species of the animal kingdom whose members
exist in Washington in a wild state. This includes the following
non-native species living in the most urban of areas: eastern gray
squirrels and opossums.

The term "wildlife" does not include feral domestic animals (house
cats) and Old World mice and rats.

For information on specific wildlife species and related topics in the
state of Washington see http://wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/living/index.htm.
