In falconry, the bird of choice for hunting the Eastern Gray Squirrel is a female RTH for her powerful footing.

This morning my wife and I observed a mature Red- tailed Hawk
pluck a Eastern Gray Squirrel from our "squirrel proof" feeder.
The Squirrel was hanging upside down from the feeder in it's usual posture which enables it to pick seeds from the feeder without closing the gate. The hawk came out of no where and caught it's prey without losing a wing beat and then flew to a nearby perch clutching the prey for a couple of minutes before flying off.
