Subject: [Tweeters] Skagit River eagle viewing: best time?

Dear Margaret and Tweeters,
Although the Eagle Festival is usually later in the
season, the best time to see lots of Bald Eagles in
the Upper Skagit is December, maybe into early
January.
As I recall, the Eagle Festival was originally
designed to occur after the big numbers of eagles had
left, in order to minimize disturbance to the birds. I
think the organizers may also have wanted to have it
after the period of maximally nasty weather. December
is the best time for the viewing of Bald Eagles up
there, but it is almost always miserable, cold, and
rainy during the peak eagle-watching time. That's why,
even when I lived in Concrete, I used to do at most
one trip up to Rockport/Marblemount to see this
spectacle--for upriver birders, it's just too tempting
to go "downriver" at this challenging season!
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
