Randy and all,

I sure hate to eat crow, but I got a much better (and much closer) look at this bird today and it's a Merlin after all. Sorry everyone.

Dennis, we've had peregrines in and around Othello during the winter some years. Got a pigeon supply nearby? And a distribution of cell phone towers? They're not as rare as they were 10 or 20 years ago. - Randy

Work today took me to the western foot of Badger Mt. south of Richland. Out of the corner of my eye glimpsed a falcon land on the top of a power pole. I initially took it to be a Merlin, but after grabbing the bins and moving in for a closer look discovered I was looking at a small, dark Peregrine. I've come to expect to see Peregrines along the Columbia River, particularly on the Yakima River delta, but this location is at least 5 air miles from the Columbia River. I'm still surprised.
