Saturday, December 15, 2007 Rose DuBois, Anne Kahle, and myself birded Mason County in the rain. Places birded are: Skokomish Valley Road, FR 23, Potlatch State Park, Lilliwaup, Hamma Hamma River mouth, FR 25, Lena Lake Trailhead, Shelton, Kennedy Creek mouth. We saw a total of 57 birds. Highlights include: White-crowned Sparrows up the Skokomish River Valley, Western Bluebirds-Skokomish River Valley, Eared Grebe and Marbled Murrelet at Potlatch State Park, and Ruffed Grouse on FR 25. This Ruffed Grouse was much larger and darker than the ones we normally see in the Blue Mountains of southeast Washington. A herd of elk were feeding in one of the back pastures up the Skokomish River Valley. Not many birds in the higher elevations and we turned around when the snow started to get deeper. Snowflakes were mingled in with the rain at times.

Trumpeter Swans were not at the normal Hamma Hamma River mouth, but back in the brush and trees of the Skokomish River marshlands. Instead there were over 50 Bald Eagles at the Hamma Hamma River mouth. Lots of dead salmon to feed on.
