There are more Goshawks in southern Arizona during the winter because they are more concentrated then, after moving down from widely scattered northern breeding grounds. I was lucky to have seen males of both the common subspecies and the darker Chiricahua Mt. variety. But I was just a non-expert relying on a field guide and background literature, and without birding friends.
