Tweeters,

While it seems there has never been much of a coordinated survey of
roosting Vaux's Swifts in Tweeter-land, there has in Oregon. It's
titled "A Fall Survey of Vaux's Swifts in the Willamette Valley". It
was coordinated for the the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife by
Mary Derr Van Brocklin in 2000. My guess is it was circulated, by not
really published, and feel fortunate to have gotten a hard copy from
Steve Engle of Portland Audubon.

Why they just did the valley rather than the state probably had to do
with availably of volunteers.

Sighting were reported at 15 locations from September 3 through
October 21. It involved more than 100 Volunteers, had a good bit of
press coverage, and a good time was had by all. Unfortunately it was
a one year deal.

The locations are sometimes obscure, especially those listed as" other
sites".

Here are the sites with peak count and it's dates.

Albany Sites 1,004 on Sept. 21
Corvallis First Pres. 4,500 on Sept 10
Corvallis other sites 160 on Sept 14
Cottage Grove 260 on Sept 21
Eugene Agate Hall 16,487 on Sept 15
Eugene Old Wareh. 238 on Sept 21
Eugene other sites 110 on Sept 6
Independence 130 on Sept 13
Jnctn City: Laurel 1565 on Sep 20
Oregon City sites 1,670 on Sep 15
PDX: Chapman 20, 031 on Sep 21

Roseburg 3,973 on Sep 17
Salem: Capital Place 2,750 on Sep 22

Could the Tweeter's nation assemble an army of 100-strong swift
counters to do a similar survey in our state?

My next post will give you the Washington sites.
