My Christmas cards from my home state were loaded with clippings and photos of the Black-Tailed Gull and the Forked-Tailed Flycatcher that appeared there this fall. The gull was seen at Saylorville Lake (North of Des Moines) on the 17th of November. He was spotted in the general area for about a week.
The Fork-Tailed Flycatcher was seen at Clutier (near Marshalltown). Residents wanted to trap him and move him south but the Iowa game people moved in. Wildlife experts feel he might have headed out or died due to extreme weather.
The place has been overrun with politicians the past six weeks. When a flock of 700 bird watchers moveing in from CA,MO,WI,CO,TX, the Dakotas and Ontario Province it can be over whelming. "They stayed in our motels, ate in our restaurants and even shopped in our stores. They spent money and were friendly", the Des Moines Register reported. Amazing!
