A great place to start would be the Burke Museum.

Subject: [Tweeters] Common Barn Owl - found dead but pristine - suggestionsfor disposal?

Hi Tweets,

My fiance, Larry, and I were driving back to Camano Island this evening after birding along the Skagit River and Barnaby Slough, when I spotted what looked like an owl laying apparently dead on the center divider of the road on SR 532, approx. 1/4 mile East of Terry's Corner and West of Heichel Road. We were in separate cars, so when we got to the house I told Larry what I thought I saw. We doubled back, and sure enough it was a COMMON BARN OWL. Unfortunately it must have swooped into a passing vehicle and suffered some sort of internal trauma and injuries, because it otherwise looks in perfect condition. It must have only *just* struck a car shortly before we passed it the first time; it was at least half-an-hour before we went back to retrieve it and it was still limp and without any rigor. We couldn't bear to see such a magnificent creature destroyed on the roadway by cars, so we scooped it into a box and brought it home. The box is now in our garage refrigerator (hopefully not to be reminiscent of the duck story of last week), and we are wondering about the best and most proper way to dispose of the bird. Is there anything we need to know from a legal standpoint, and/or is there some way the bird could be used for educational or scientific purposes?

Suggestions appreciated. We have limited time in the next few days to drive the bird anywhere, so some place close to Camano Island or if someone wants to come to us would be best.

Thanks,
