Yesterday afternoon, Cameron Cox and I stopped at the Mukilteo Ferry Dock to photograph goldeneyes. There was an adult male COMMON x BARROW'S GOLDENEYE in the flock of Barrow's. This bird has an oval-shaped white patch on the head that is intermediate in size and shape between Common and Barrow's. The scapulars are another indication that it's a hybrid. The bird does not have white squares with thick black borders like Barrow's or white scapulars with thin black edges like Common. The scapulars are intermediate with white spots that are rectangular, bordered with ticker black edges. There was a group of ~25 Barrow's Goldeneye and one first-cycle male Common hanging around the ferry terminal and in front of Ivar's.
