Sunday February 18, 2007:
Over twenty TRUMPETER SWANS were seen at the Ugly Dwarf Meadows near the
ESSO Service Station at Nanoose Bay.
The Sunday Bird Walk went to the Neck Point Park in Nanaimo. Among the
highlites were five RED-THROATED LOONS off shore---the first time we have
seen that number of RED-THROATED LOONS at one time on the Sunday bird walk.
Sixteen birders found the following thirty-six species: RED-THROATED LOON,
PACIFIC LOON, COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, BRANDT'S CORMORANT, DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANT, PELAGIC CORMORANT, GREAT BLUE HERON,MALLARD, HARLEQUIN DUCK, SURF
SCOTER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, BUFFLEHEAD, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, COMMON
GOLDEN-EYE, COMMON MERGANSER, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, BALD EAGLE, BLACK
OYSTERCATCHER, BLACK TURNSTONE, THAYER'S GULL, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL,
MARBLED MURRELET, EUROPEAN STARLING, ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD,, NORTHERN FLICKER,
PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHWESTERN CROW, AMERICAN ROBIN,CHESTNUT-BACKED
CHICKADEE, WINTER WREN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, SPOTTED TOWHEE, SONG SPARROW
and DARK-EYED JUNCO.

Saturday February 17:
One TURKEY VULTURE was spotted above the 5700 block of Lost Lake Road near
Lost Lake in north Nanaimo.
Two PINE GROSBEAKS were sighted at the base of the trail leading to Mount
COKELY.
Two ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS were seen coming to feeders in the 800 block of
Grouse Place, near Long Lake in Nanaimo.
Eight HOUSE FINCH, six CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, were seen in the backyard
at the Backyard Wildbird and Nature Store in the 6300 block O Metral Drive
in north Nanaimo.

Friday February 16:
A BARRED OWL was seen in a yard along Oliver Road in north Nanaimo.
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and PINE SISKINS were seen at Buttertubs Marsh in
Nanaimo.

Thursday February 15:
A PEREGRINE FALCON was preeming itself on the tall Fir Tree along Corfield
Street in Parksville.
Wednesday February 14:
The Wednesday Bird Walk went to Deep Bay. Eight birders found the following
twenty-eight species: PACIFIC LOON, COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED
GREBE, BRANDT'S CORMORANT, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, PELAGIC CORMORANT,
TRUMPETER SWAN,HARLEQUIN DUCK, LONG-TAILED DUCK, BLACK SCOTER, SURF SCOTER,
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, COMMON GOLDENEYE, BUFFLEHEAD, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER,
BALD EAGLE, MEW GULL, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, THAYER'S GULL, MARBLED MURRELET,
ROCK PIGEON, BELTED KINGFISHER, NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHWESTERN CROW,
EUROPEAN STARLING, HOUSE FINCH and SONG SPARROW.

Tuesday February 13:
A PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted flying over Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo.

Monday February 12:
A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was spotted along Evergreen Street in Parksville.
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was visiting suet feeders in the 5700 block of Garnet
Place in Nanaimo.
Four BAND-TAILED PIGEONS were seen in the 7300 block of Venture Road in
Lantzville.
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS were seen feeding in the 3400 block of Jingle Pot Road
in Nanaimo.

Sunday February 11:
A VARIED THRUSH was spotted in the 6700 block of Dickinson Road in Nanaimo.
Two Slate-coloured DARK-EYED JUNCOS, SPOTTED TOWHEES, SONG SPARROWS, FOX
SPARROWS, a pair of ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS, DOWNY WOODPECKERS, NORTHERN
FLICKERS, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BUSHTITS,
AMERICAN ROBINS, VARIED THRUSH, EUROPEAN STARLINGS, NORTHWESTERN CROWS,
COMMON RAVENS, BEWICK'S WREN, HOUSE and PURPLE FINCH, were seen in a yard
along Lancashire Avenue in Nanaimo.
Six WESTERN GREBES were seen off shore at Pipers Lagoon in Nanaimo.

Saturday February 10:
A SNOW BUNTING was seen near the Fire Station on Pirates Lane on Protection
Island.
