Hello All,
Yesterday (Feb. 17) MerryLynn and I went birding along the Columbia River in
Walla Walla County. Somehow a warm mid-May like day had arrived through a no
fault installment plan and as we birded we began to shed the customary
jackets, sweaters and hooded sweatshirts. By mid afternoon it was 70 degrees
F. Birds of note seen through the heat waves were.........

DUNLIN........................1 bird at the Railex Ponds along HWY 12
CLARKS GREBE.....1 off HWY 730 near Port Kelley
Common Loon...........1 bird near Port Kelley
Canvasback..................500+ at the Wallula grain terminals
Redhed..........................525 at Wallula Grain Terminals
Greater Scaup...............800 birds at WGT
Lesser Scaup.................1500 birds at WGT
Common Goldeneye....158 birds off the WWRdelta-this is a high number for
this site.
MEW GULL...................1 ad. bird off the WWRdelta
Horned Grebe..................20 birds off the WWRdelta
Bald Eagle.......................8 birds at the Iowa Beef Ponds
DUNLIN..........................8 birds at Iowa Beef Ponds
Coopers Hawk..................1 sub-adult at Iowa Beef Ponds
GREAT EGRET...............1 ad. at Burbank Slough
Greater White-fronted Geese...150 birds at MP 300 along HWY 12
GLAUCOUS GULL..........1 second winter bird on the poop piles
EURASIAN WIGEON.......2 males at the millet field, Wallula HMU

The sun and surf along the river gave us sunburns and caused us to be very
grateful for such a great day.
Later Mike
