Hello,
I hate being a novice birder! Yesterday around 4:45 p.m. I was sitting in a friend's backyard, chatting while our kids played, and there not 7 feet away is a hummingbird flitting up and down in front of a very tall, old stone wall (many old stones, much greenery hanging out from between the stones) nabbing insects here and there. I thought, wow, easy sighting, no problem, it's a female of some sort, one look at the ol' bird book at home and I'll know what it is. But...no. I'm flummoxed! It looks like nothing in them, but maybe the evening light was playing tricks--it looked as if it was yellow in color with brown running down its sides. I looked online to see if I could turn up myriad photos of hummingbirds in the hope I might find one, without luck. If anyone knows of a good collection of online photos of hummers to help ID them, that'd be great. I assume it's a Rufous or Anna's, but then again I assumed when a hummingbird practically sits on my teacup I should be able to i!
dentify or at least remember it...sigh...
