After reading of the Dennys daytime owling exploits for several years now,
12 of us from Tacoma,
decided it was time to give it a try. We added 3 other owling sights where
we have had good
luck in the past and ended up with a great weekend. Without much experience
in the area,
we were able to navigate successfully, only getting lost one time.
We tried several parks in the Tri-Cities at night for Screech Owl, but only
found our way frustrated.
The southern end of W.E. Johnson, is now a housing track, we arrived at
riverstone st. but could
not find the dirt track into the park. Columbia Point is now blocked off
and no access is available
under the bridge. We settled for Hood Park, trying for Saw Whet and Screech
with no success.
We did have two apparitions flying in the dense fog on the east end of the
park.
With the Blue Mtns and the Rattlesnakes as a back drop to the rolling wheat
fields this is truly a
remarkably scenic area.
We added the Wapato Cemetery mentioned by Denny Grandstand, found the Saw
Whet with
an additional 2 Great Horned.
All toll for the weekend we ended up with 23 owls. 10 the first day, 12 the
second and 1
additional at a previously visited sight.
7 Great Horned, 2 cemetery, 3 Moxee, 1 Fish Hook, and 1 Lyons Ferry fish
hatchery.
4 Barn, 1 Moxee, 1 Fish Hook, 2 Van Hollobecke.
1 Saw-Whet, Cemetery, we looked diligently for these guys, most pellets were
old and I
suspect most have moved off by now.
4 Short-Eared, 1 Lateral A, 1 Fish Hook, 2 Van Hollobecke.
7 Long-Eared, 1 Lateral A with additional on second look, 3 Van Hollobecke,
2 Windust Park.

For us west siders, this was a unique experience, beautiful scenery with
multiple owls. As we
decompressed into western wash. I could only wish we could have weekends
like this over here.

We also had 2 Ferruginous hawks on Jones rd. north of Prosser on Monday,
with a single White
Pelican near Kennewick.
