Subject: [Tweeters] swimmers on the Snoqualmie

I have a question on identifying a group of birds seen 2 days ago
swimming down the Snoqualmie River, main course of the river, in
a group of approx. 10. Friends got a closer look than I did, they were
described as black with an orange beak...around the size of geese
or a bit smaller. Active diving which kept them under water a long time,
at times only 4 were above water, all the rest were under. They moved
quickly down stream with all their swimming and diving, thus I only
got a brief look when they were quite a ways down stream. My friends,
who aren't birders (not yet anyway), were yelling for me and totally
amazed by these birds.

I'm a total novice at identifying birds except for some raptors. So, what
do you think these were?
