Are we abusing the subjunctive now?

The thing is, we all know what a "Stellar's Jay and an Eurasian Widgeon
is no matter how they are spelled. Or should I have said what
"Stellar's Jays and Eurasian Widgeons are.

Some think Herr Steller was not stellar
