I saw a peregrine carry a harlequin duck from one part of a beach to
another, perhaps covering 150 feet. It appeared to be struggling with the
weight, it did not fly very high with the duck. On another occasion I saw a
peregrine drag an immature western gull it was feeding on out of the
incoming tide. It pulled the bird with one talon about 4 feet up the beach.
The falcon allowed two hikers with backpacks to pass it at about 4 feet and
did not fly. I presumed from this that it could not carry the weight of the
gull but of course that could have been mistaken.
