Thank you very much for all of your ideas and suggestions regarding
light weight scopes and tripods. I researched and considered them all.
Here is what I chose:

I looked for a tripod first, since that was where I was most able to
save weight. The Manfrotto 728D made my decision easy because it saved
me 3.5# over my former tripod & head, suited my height very well, and
had controls I could easily manage with the heavy mittens I must wear in
cold weather.

The scope decision was much harder. I only managed to save a half pound
over my former scope with the Nikon Fieldscope III ED 60mm with a
20x-60x zoom. I felt the Fieldscope suited my purposes best, although
others were up to a half pound lighter. I wanted very much to look at
the new 50mm Fieldscope 13x-40x, but no one had it and the wait to just
get to see it was too unpredictable.

Thank you again for your very useful ideas, offers and suggestions.
