My wife and I decided to spend the day on the coast today. The weather was
pleasant though cold (what a surprise huh?). Birding was a bit on the lean
side, though we set a pretty leisurely pace. Highlights were as follows. A
CLARKS GREBE was among several Western Grebes off of the eastern most finger
jetty opposite the Westport Boat Basin. About two blocks north of the Red
Apple Market in Westport there was an adult female Anna's Hummingbird. I
scrutinized all 5 siskins I was able to find in Westport, but nothing
unusual there.

Along Highway 101 at the first pullout south or the North Cove breakwater,
there was a Marbled Murrelet among the usual suspects. Approaching Tokeland
there were good numbers of Red Crossbills, but still, very few siskins. On
the water were perhaps 1000 Brant, and near the Tradewinds Hotel there was a
male Anna's Hummingbird. We passed through the Cranberry fields between
North Cove and Grayland and picked out a very nice "black" Merlin, but
little else in the area.
