Subject: [Tweeters] Pine Grosbeak food question

Dear Tweeters,

Five Pine Grosbeaks gave me close, prolonged views at
the Fir Island Game Range yesterday. They were at the
corner of the trail, reached as one walks along the
dike from the boat launch, before that long leg turns
right to form the short leg of the walk.

The grosbeaks were eating two foods. They ate the buds
of some small, brushy trees that might be willows.
They were also eating some red fruits that hang from
small trees growing along that section of the dike. I
took home a small twig with three of the fruits
dangling off it. The dried fruits make a soft rattling
sound when I shake the twig. The buds of this tree
were quite small. Does anyone know what the fruits
might be?

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
