Subject: [Tweeters] name not showing on emails (solution)

Hi All -
There is a question about why some names do not show up in brackets in the
Siler archive birdingonthe.net (and probably this will also be the case on
individual emails and the tweeters digest). I believe this has to do w/
account settings on the individual's email client ( e.g. Outlook, hotmail,
gmail, etc.). This is actually pretty common on tweeters and many other
lists for that matter. Correcting this will help in sorting through emails
on the digest and the birdingonthe.net site.
To fix it should be a relatively simply matter of going into the account
settings and making sure your name is there along w/ your email address.
There should be a seperate entry for a name in addition to the actual email
address. Changes can be tested by sending test emails back to yourself. How
to do this will vary depending on the email software being used.
Email addresses often are unrelated to the owner's name so email protocol
allows a name to be sent along w/ the email address (for e.g. Charles Swift
< chaetura at gmail.com> or Tweeters <tweeters at u.washington.edu>). This allows
the receiving email client to list an alternate name in the FROM column
which is usually more meaningful than the email address. I presume this also
what Siler's software is using to show the sender's name in the subject
line.
Charles.
