At the Ridgefield NWR I watched a female Northern Harrier
repeatedly dive at a coot in shallow water which would submerge at each
attack. Eventually the Coot was unable to spend very long underwater and
the Harrier pounced on the Coot and put a foot on its head holding its
down until the prey quit struggling. Just before this hawk could commence
eating the Coot another Northern Harrier swooped in and drove the first
bird off of the lifeless body of the Coot.
