Today Sherry and I checked out Mayfield Lake, the west end of Riffe
Lake, Swofford Pond, and the Cowlitz Trout Hatchery.
Mayfield Lake was the most covered, as we stopped at 4 different
locations around the lake. We had a flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers, 6
Western Grebes, 4 Canvasback Ducks, Lesser Scaups, and a single American
Wigeon.
At Riffe Lake and Swofford Pond we had, 1 Western Grebe, 1 Common Loon,
lots of Common Mergansers, lots of American Coots, and 1 Scrub Jay.
The Cowlitz Trout Hatchery in Salkum, (which I rate as the second best
birding spot in Lewis County), we had a single Osprey flush from a tree
and fly around over the fish holding bins, which are in the back of the
facility. Also seen were, 2 American Pipits, a flock of Yellow-rumped
Warblers, Varied Thrushes, Golden-crowned Sparrows, 2 Red-tailed Hawks,
Lesser Scaups, Buffleheads, and 1 Spotted Sandpiper, all in about ten
minutes.
