Sunday January 21, 2007:
The Sunday Bird Walk went to the Nanaimo River Estuary. Among the highlites
were eight WESTERN MEADOWLARKS, several BALD EAGLES and a NORTHERN SHRIKE
that greeted us from the top the Big Oak Tree at the start of the walk.
Twelve birders found the following thirty-two species:
GREAT BLUE HERON, TRUMPETER SWAN, AMERICAN WIGEON, MALLARD,
NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, BUFFLEHEAD, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, HOODED
MERGANSER, COMMON MERGANSER, BALD EAGLE, KILLDEER, MEW GULL, THAYER'S GULL,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, BELTED KINGFISHER, WILSON'S SNIPE, NORTHERN FLICKER,
NORTHERN SHRIKE, STELLER'S JAY, NORTHWESTERN CROW, COMMON RAVEN, BEWICK'S
WREN, AMERICAN ROBIN, EUROPEAN STARLING, SPOTTED TOWHEE, SONG SPARROW,
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, WESTERN MEADOWLARK, HOUSE FINCH and
BUSHTITS.

Saturday January 20:
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted across from the rest stop at Nanoose Bay.
EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in the 7400 block of Elizabeth Way in
Lantzville.

Thursday January 18:
A YELLOW-SHAFTED NORTHERN FLICKER was seen along Cathers Drive in Nanaimo.
Two GREAT-HORNED OWLS are heard nightly in the 4200 block of Clubhouse Drive
in Nanaimo.

Wednesday January 17:
Five RING-NECKED DUCKS and several BUFFLEHEADS were seen at Haslam Marsh off
Haslam Road near the Airport.
Three PINE GROSBEAKS were seen at feeders in the 100 block of Thulin Street
in
Campbell River.
The Wednesday Bird Walk went to the Englishman River Estuary, Shelly Road
side, in Parksville. Among the highlites were nine BRANT GEESE, three
GREATED WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and a PEREGRINE FALCON perched on the top of a
Fir tree. Eleven Birders found the following forty-nine species: PACIFIC
LOON,
COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, TRUMPETER SWAN, GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, CANADA GOOSE, BRANT, EURASIAN WIGEON, AMERICAN WIGEON,
MALLARD, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREATER SCAUP,COMMON GOLDENEYE, BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE, BUFFLEHEAD, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, COMMON MERGANSER, GREAT BLUE
HERON, BALD EAGLE,RED-TAILED HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, DUNLIN, BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER, KILLDEER, MEW GULL, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, BELTED KINGFISHER, DOWNY
WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, STELLER'S JAY, NORTHWESTERN CROW, AMERICAN
CROW, VARIED THRUSH, AMERICAN ROBIN, EUROPEAN STARLING,BEWICK'S WREN, WINTER
WREN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, CHESTNUT-BACKED
CHICKADEE, SONG SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, SPOTTED TOWHEE, RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD, RED-BRESTED NUTHATCH, FOX SPARROW, BROWN CREEPER and BREWER'S
BLACKBIRDS.
Monday January 15:

A YELLOW-SHAFTED NORTHERN FLICKER and a flock of 93 BREWERS BLACKBIRDS were
seen in the 2600 block of Kevan Drive on Gabriola Island.

Sunday January 14:
A SNOW GOOSE was seen at the French Creek Estuary. Four ANCIENT MURRELET'S,
seven BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS, 450 DUNLIN and two SANDERLING were seen at
Rathtrevor Provincial Park.
A pair of GADWALL were seen at the Craig Creek Park in Parksville.
Two VARIED THRUSH were seen at feeders along Dolphin Drive in Nanoose Bay.

Saturday January 13:
Nine BUSHTITS, a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, two PILEATED WOODPECKERS, two NORTHERN
FLICKERS, seven VARIED THRUSH, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, BED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES, SPOTTED TOWNEES, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, a BROWN CREEPER and a pair of
SONG SPARROWS are visiting a yard in the 5000 block of Ventura Drive in
Nanaimo.

Friday January 12
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was seen on the Whally Creek trail by Harry Whipper
Park, in north Nanaimo.
A RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER was seen in a backyard in the Eaglecrest area of
Qualicum Beach.
Over twenty AMERICAN ROBINS and four STELLER'S JAYS are visiting a yard
along West Crescent Road in Qualicum Beach.
A Yellow varient HOUSE FINCH, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and a BROWN CREEPER have been visiting
feeders in the 1500 block of Scarlet Hill in Nanaimo.

Sunday January 07:
An estimated 250 SURFBIRDS were seen roosting near the Beacon on Hudson Rock
off Stevenson Point in Nanaimo.
