Today Matt Dufort and I headed up to the Skagit Flats in hopes of finding the WHOOPER SWAN and to check out the Skagit Wildlife Management Headquarters Area. We did locate the swan in Conway, at about 12:00, just north of the church along the Skagit City Road. We then spent the rest of the day walking the dike trail and searching the Skagit Wildlife Area. Highlights of the trip were:
WHOOPER SWAN - Conway area as mentioned above
NORTHERN SHRIKE - on a phone wire near the location of the Whooper Swan
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW - two birds near the parking area for the boat launch (Skagit WMA)
SLATE-COLORED JUNCO - two birds also near the parking area for the boat launch (SKAGIT WMA)
GREAT HORNED OWL - near the third bridge along the river side of the dike trail (SKAGIT WMA)
AMERICAN BITTERN - Also near the third bridge along the river side of the dike trail (SKAGIT WMA)
SWAMP SPARROW - at the parking area for the boat launch
PINE GROSBEAK - one bird only; at the Skagit WMA
SNOW GOOSE - one dark/blue morph bird in amongst the many, a couple of miles north of the church along the Skagit City Road.
MERLIN - two birds at the Skagit WMA
VIRGINIA RAIL - one bird running across the dike trail at the Skagit WMA
Yesterday, I took the trek out to Point No Point and was one of the lucky ones that had super looks of the THICK-BILLED MURRE, what a treat!
Cheers and Good Birding;
