Hey Tweets!
Reporting an unusual behaviour.
Saturday (Jan 20) there was a LARGE flock of Surf
Scoters in Penn Cove on Whidbey Island, about 4-500
birds. They were actively feeding, but they were all
diving simultaneously, and grouped up in one big,
tight raft!

So you would look out across the cove, and see just a
few birds. Look down in the scope, then look back up
and there is this huge raft of birds on the surface!
Look down again and they were all gone again!

All these birds were diving at the same time, and all
staying down several minutes, before all popping back
up to the surface! The behaviour continued for the
whole time we were there (30-45 minutes), and they
seemed to be following something under the water,
because the whole group was moving around the cove, as
they followed whatever it was.

Any ideas about what they were eating? Anyone else
seen this behaviour?

Guy
