Last winter I heard a ruckus in my yard, and ran outside only to
accidentally spook a Cooper?s hawk off a dead bantam rooster. This was
late afternoon, and the hawk did not return that evening. The next
morning I went out in the dark to watch the sun rise, as I usually do,
and the hawk came gliding in to the carcass again. I thought it was
going for another live chicken, so I stood up and it veered into a tree.
Realizing it was coming back to the kill, I tossed the dead rooster into
the pasture, and the hawk quickly came down to it. She tucked right in
and spent the next three hours eating the entire thing. When people
walked by on the nearby road she clutched the rooster and dragged it
farther into the woods. I got to watch her the whole time, and she
could hardly fly when she was done. She picked that rooster clean to
the bones! Now that I just have full-size chickens, hawks haven?t been
a problem. But I reassure people in my bird classes that even chickens
can learn bird i.d.?you should see the whole flock come to attention
when a hawk or eagle flies over.

We once had a Cooper?s Hawk that fed for at least 2 days on an Eastern
Cottontail in our yard. It even attempted to drag the carcass into our
brush pile when I went to get into our car. This was during a cold snap
so perhaps it?s more often encountered during trying times.
