Hi Tweeters,

I'll bet a lot people visiting Wa to see the Whooper
Swan from the East Coast have Steller's Jay on their
want list in addition to our most famous visitor. So
I wanted to mention a spot not too far away that has
been very reliable for me for the Steller's Jay. It
is Thomle Rd, south of Stanwood. A nickname for this
road for me is Raptor Restaurant. I have watched
several different species of raptors dine on prey from
this road. The jays can be found very soon after
going down the road, usually on the right hand side of
this dead end road. It is worth birding this road
until you get to a large metal outbuilding which is
good place to turn around. The road ends at a farm.

The Washington State ABA guide has Thomle Rd on the
map on P 184. From Conway go south on Pioneer to
Hwy532 in the outskirts of Stanwood then go right (W),
then quickly turn left (S) on Marine drive. Thomle is
a few miles down on the west side of the road, a right
turn.
