Hello everyone,

well, surprise, surprise. it turns out that indeed,
the recurve-billed bushbird HAD been photographed
before now -- in April 2004 by Chris Sharpe and
Colombian ornithologist, Oscar Laverde. Apparently,
the press releases I was relying on were mistaken in
this (ABC and National Geographic). Unfortunately,
when I investigated the story further, I was unable to
find anything substantial to suggest otherwise, except
for one fuzzy suggestion that the bird might have been
photographed in 2004, which I did mention -- obliquely
-- in my piece, without providing any further detail.
Anyway, Chris Sharpe and I have been corresponding and
he sent this to me for the ornithological community;

As I understand things, he will also send me one or
more of his pictures of this bird.
