i had a great opportunity last weekend to visit Tucquala lake at the head of the cle elum river on the east side of the cascades, and besides kayaking and mountain biking, had the opportunity to observe some bird life. lots of evening grosbeaks and pine siskings, and the spruce budworms hanging on silk threads from englemann spruce. also severa females with youn of goldeneye..didnt ID whether they were barrows or common. then spotted a few western tanagers high in the trees, one with a flock of grosbeaks that alighted on the ground. the tanager stayed high and flew off.

i would like to learn more about western tanagers..they seem so difficult to observe and to follow...seem to stay high in the spruce tops or upper third, and came to the stream/tucqualla lake only once. we saw two females, and a male over about 11 miles of river. Does anyone know of breeding pairs either on the west or east side of the cascades that might be observable?
