Tweets,

Today 7 of us enjoyed a comfortable walk at Nisqually starting out under
high overcast and ending in bright sunshine. It got pretty warm toward the end
of the walk, but all in all it was a very nice day.

Highlights included a GREEN HERON in the tallest bare tree across from the
parking lot as we arrived at 8:00 am or so. It took a minute or two to figure
out what it was. Most of us got good looks before it flew off toward the
Nisqually River.

We also saw a couple of AMERICAN BITTERN in flight out toward McAllister
Creek and saw KILLDEER, WESTERN SANDPIPERS, and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS on the last
pond area at McAllister Creek.

All the SWALLOWS were present, although their numbers were way down.
Nesting is over for them. The RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS again were at the snag
behind the visitor center and we got a decent view of a fly by PILIATED WOODPECKER
in the riparian area between the ring dike and the Nisqually River overlook.

Lots of birds feeding young including a family of WARBLING VIREOS between
the twin barns and the Nisqually River.

All told we saw 45 species for the day with nothing new for the year.

Mammals seen included EASTERN COTTONTAIL, EASTERN GRAY SQUIRREL, and a
family of four RACCOONS.

Until next week...
