Hello,

Frankly, I am not a highly motivated hot weather birder, so I left early
this morning for Pend Oreille County looking for shorebirds. Found a few
interesting things;

Around Calispell Lake, I encountered Greater Yellowlegs, Black Necked
Stilts, Spotted Sandpipers, and Wilson's Snipes. Soras called from the marsh
while Black Terns flew overhead. There were about 50 White Pelicans on the
lake. Riparian birding is noticeably beginning to slow down. There were
Pygmy & White Breasted Nuthatches in the large Ponderosa Pines on the north
side of the lake. Pileated Woodpeckers were fun to see as well.

Along Highway 20 just north of Usk, I noticed a LEWIS' WOODPECKER in the
same place they were found last year (just before you get to the "Bobolink"
fields.

With the heat beginning to rise, I made my way to the east side of the Pend
Oreille River. Things were pretty slow except a Wilson's Phalarope and a
lone Least Sandpiper at River Bend.

76 degrees at 9:30 am meant one thing - time to go home.
