Sherry and I went on a hike up to Deer and Sand Lake at White Pass
today. The mosquitoes were just awful the higher we went. After reaching
Sand Lake, we high tailed it back down to Deer Lake due to mosquito
swarming. Deer Lake was a little better, but not much. Leech Lake at the
parking lot was actually the best spot to be. The most numerous
butterfly that we encountered during the day was the California
Tortoiseshell. Up to 20 at one time in just a single place, and they
were along the trail in the open areas, and down by Leech Lake. A Bluet
species damselfly was quite numerous as well, especially at all three
lakes.
Some of the birds for the day were;
Spotted Sandpiper, Vaux's Swift, Rufous Hummingbird, Western Wood Pewee,
Olive-sided Flycatcher, Mountain Chickadee, Warbling Vireo,
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Hermit Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Western Tanager,
Chipping Sparrow, Evening Grosbeak, and Pine Siskin.

Butterflies that we saw were;
Hoary Comma - quite a few
Silvery Blue - several
Greenish Blue - 1
Coronis Fritillary -1
California Tortoiseshell - many

Dragonflies that we saw were;
Four-spotted Skimmer - several
Hudsonian Whiteface - 2
Bluet (species) - many
