Yes, it is a Barred Owl. I'm a guide at the arboretum and led a weekend walk
there this afternoon. Everyone in our small group, including a 6-year-old
and two au pairs from Brazil, got good looks at the owl, which was perched
on a limb in a grove of treelike rhododendrons flanking the trail just east
of Azalea Way and north of Rhododendron Glen. It made me glad I always carry
binoculars, "just in case."

Is the big owl in the Arboretum (which "followed" me and hissed!) a barred
owl?
Upper trail in the big trees and Rhodies.
Thanks,
Patricia
