Hey All, first off, after I dropped my friend Sea
Mckeon off for the Anacortes/Friday Harbor Ferry I got
a call shortly after saying that he had just seen an
adult Sabine's Gull. He is a great birder and more
familiar with Seabirds than most people I know. I
didn't get too many details other than the time was
about 1450.
The P.Townsend/Keystone Ferry was very active
this morning at the 1100 sailing with the tide just
coming in. Thousands of Rhinos were in with the
salmon sport fisherman, a few Murres and Guillemots as
well. We only saw 10 or so Marbled Murrelets, and no
Ancients or Puffins. There were also upwards of 100
Heerman's Gulls, the most I have seen in the state
together at one time.
On the afternoon sailing to P. Townsend the
numbers of birds were way down, but I managed to find
a pair of Ancient Murrelets as they scuttled up out of
the water and flew north, out of the ferry's path.
Sunday night the Elwha river mouth provided great
alcid watching as well as a fantastic sunset. We had
many Rhinos, 10 or so Marbled Murrelets, a few Murres
and one Tufted Puffin, all within great binocular
range. There was also a handful of peeps on the
shore, Leasts and a few Westerns for sure and a
handful of Dunlin as well. These were a little harder
to view without the scope. Good birding,
