A person who lives at about the 1,800' level in Clark County
called me today to ask why a flycatcher at their place would be attacking
hummingbirds. From their description it sounds like it may be a Willow
Flycatcher, the bird sits on top of a pole with a thistle seed feeder and
dives at hummingbirds using a nectar feeder about 15' away. They have
seen this action repeated over several days and the flycatcher will drive
the hummingbirds to the ground. The flycatcher will also perch on their
deck railings and attack hummers using feeders closer to the house. My
only supposition is that the flycatcher may have a nest nearby and is
guarding it, anyone have other suggestions, ideas, or like experiences?
