Hi Tweeters,

Yesterday I was walking along the beach at Ocean Shores behind the construction site by the shipreck and found several dead birds on the beach: one adult western grebe, a small gull (could not identify what kind) and behind the log toward the end of the sandy beach (where the grass begins) there were the remains of a colorful parrot with a thick silver ring on its leg (not concerned about this one, it must have been an escaped pet). I also found a young loon or grebe that was just sitting in the sand, and although I didn't apprach it very closely, I was close enough to tell that it should have been frightened of me (maybe 10 feet away). It was just sitting there with its bill tucked under its wing, watching, but not even trying to move. I took some pictures of it if anyone would like to see if it was injured or sick, let me know and I can email them to you. I am guessing that the construction around the shipreck may have contaminated the water, as there were an unusually
large number of dead birds on the beach. Very sad sight to behold...
Andi
