On Saturday, Sherry and I hiked along the Juniper Ridge trail between
Sunrise Peak and Jumbo Peak. Most of the trail was in open meadow and
low brush, with a few scattered trees. The denser area of trees were
lower down, so the birding was quite slow for most of the day, but
picked up around 5:00pm as we were heading back down. The butterflies
that we had during the day was quite good, finding 18 species along the
trail. Eleven mountain goats were seen from Sunrise Peak to Jumbo Peak.
The tranquility of the trail can be disturbed by the dirt bikes coming
through. We had at least 20 dirt bikers on the trail, but they were
quite courteous and some even stopped to chat. Even the goats don't mind
them. They just sit and watch from their rocky perches.
We ended the day with 21 bird species, just beating out my butterfly
species list by 3. Here's what we saw;
