Subject: [Tweeters] Request for Assistance Band-tailed Pigeon Research

Biologists from the US Geological Survey are working with WADFW biologists
on a study of Pacific Coast Band-tailed Pigeons. We will be marking
several birds (up to 25) with solar powered satellite transmitters to
learn more about the migration patterns and habitat requirements of this
migratory species. We are looking for possible trapping sites where we
can capture and mark one or two birds. We would like to mark birds in
Northern Washington but would appreciate any potential leads for trapping
locations. Ideally the birds would be caught over bait on ground feeders.
Please let us know if you might have a suggestion for possible trapping
locations. We would like to have all the birds marked by the end of
August and thus your input will be invaluable in our effort to study this
species.

Once the birds are marked you will be able to follow their movement on our
website at http://www.werc.usgs.gov/dixon/pigeon/pigeon.htm During our
pilot work in 2006 with pigeons marked in Southern California one of the
birds migrated north to nest on Orcas Island and then returned to southern
California in the Fall.
Thanks for your interest!
Mike
