Hi Rachel,
I had the same question as you regarding this moth, which I noticed while out there setting some surveys up (and spending some time chasing chats and stuff) in mid-May. Russell Link mentioned to me that the description of the moth sounds like a Cinnabar moth, an introduction to control ragwort. It is an Arctiid moth, as William mentions. There are tons of them out there, maybe this is what you saw?
